When FIBA were exploring ways to digitally engage their fans for the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, they were looking for a solution that would work alongside their existing tournament app focusing primarily on fan engagement. Working with the Local Organising Committee and FIBA, we looked to develop an app that fans could embrace to get the most out of their World Cup experience.

The 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup was the premier event on the FIBA Women’s Basketball calendar and as such, required a fan engagement solution befitting its occasion. With a showcase of some of the finest basketball talent on the planet, the fans needed to be fully engaged, not just in the stands, but throughout the entire tournament.

 

We were tasked with developing a digital platform that complimented FIBA’s already existing Women’s World Cup App to deliver services that further enhanced the fan experience.

We worked with the Local Organising Committee as well as FIBA, with the aim being to make sure that fans had a way to get the most out of their World Cup experience. Whilst the FIBA App focused more on event details and stats, the FIBA Fan Experience App we developed focused squarely on enhancing the fans fun, excitement, and overall enjoyment of the tournament.

 

We tapped into our many years of experience catering to basketball fans during tournaments and events to develop an App that could be used in conjunction with the FIBA App. We designed the FIBA Fan Experience App to have basic tournament information, but the main goal was to have the app focus mostly on entertainment and fun for spectators.

The final result was a resounding success! The FIBA Fan Experience App was download 4,775 times as we achieved a fan engagement tool that entertained, informed, engaged and promoted precisely how we had envisioned. Almost 6,000 photos were snapped through the FIBA Fan Experience App along with over 1 million votes cast through the polling feature which the fans really enjoyed.

The developed modules listed below had been created in consultation with FIBA and other stakeholders to guarantee a memorable experience for all who attended the tournament and the results speak for themselves. The homepage was visited over 13,000 times with nearly 74,000 ad views for tournament sponsor banners. Memories were made, accolades were handed out, players gave their all and everything was made that much more exciting with the inclusion of the FIBA Fan Experience App.

The FIBA Fan Experience App was made available for basketball fans to download in the lead up to the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup so fans could get ready early. By the time the medals were handed out and the winning team held up that trophy, the FIBA Fan Experience App had achieved the goal set out, which was to make the whole experience more fun and special for all who graced the tournament.
